How to kill innovation
Working at the entrepreneurial fringe, means I learn about a lot of awesome stuff, and then, in a business like mine, I have to find other businesses who are willing to adopt this stuff in their own business. I have to do this in order to get paid for the knowledge I’ve acquired and the time I’ve taken, not just to learn the ‘stuff’ but to also learn about what is not working.
Adoption of new stuff could also be called “innovation” and its something that people in general are unwilling to do. It’s a human nature thing.
So if you want to kill innovation, and get dominated by your competitors in the process, repeat after me:
- “We don’t do it that way”
- “This has to go to the board for approval”
- “It’s not in our budget for this financial year”
- “We already have our suppliers”
- ” I don’t want that solution”
Or simply just don’t return phone calls when I call to say I’ve got a great idea that might be helpful.
The fact is, not everything works. There are no guarantees, but I do know, if you keep doing what you’ve always been doing, you’ll get overtaken by your competitors who are not scared by the concept of innovation.
